Barbara Jean Woods Avent
November 26, 1939 – February 24, 2025
Barbara Jean Avent, 85, of Dalhart, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, just 79 days after the passing of her beloved husband, George W Avent. She was born on November 26, 1939, in Bentonville, Arkansas, to Henry and Bertha Mae Woods. She was the 3rd of five children. At the young age of 18, Barbara married her soulmate, George on September 6, 1958 and together they spent over 66 wonderful years sharing a life full of love, devotion, and countless memories.
In 1962, Barbara and George moved to the ranch north of Dalhart. Though the transition was difficult at first, Barbara's strong spirit and love for her family turned the ranch into a home filled with warmth and laughter. She dedicated herself to her faith, her family, and her husband, always demonstrating the qualities of a Proverbs 31 wife. Barbara was known for her generous heart and nurturing nature, preparing three delicious meals a day for her family and George’s ranch hands and lovingly sewing all of George's shirts and most of the kid's clothes.
Barbara’s greatest joy, however, came from raising her three children. Her life on the ranch with her family was filled with love, kindness, and cherished moments. A true homemaker at heart, Barbara had a gift for making everything around her better, whether it was a meal, a home, or even fresh cow’s butter. Her family still lovingly remembers her telling George, "I can strain it if you can drink it," referring to milk brought in by him from the barn that the cow had kicked and stepped in.
Barbara’s heart grew even bigger as she became a grandmother. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. There were many fond memories they had from their visits to the ranch and even after Barbara and George moved to town, but the fondest was her “best burnt toast.” What started as an accidental creation became a family tradition, with Barbara carefully scraping off the burnt parts and serving it with love, a small gesture that captured her nurturing spirit.
A devout member of Central Methodist Church, Barbara was cherished by many in her community, known for her kindness, grace, and unwavering faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W Avent; her parents, Henry and Bertha Mae Woods; her brother, Jerry Woods; her sister, Sandra Madding; and her grandson, Trinity Avent.
Barbara’s memory lives on in the hearts of her surviving family: her children, Bevin Avent and wife Donna of San Jon, NM, Bevilyn Wright and husband Jimmy of Dalhart, TX, Lavert Avent and wife Tammie of Mineral Wells, TX, brother Billy Woods of Amarillo, TX, sister Karen Burkhalter of Summerville, SC, sister-in-law Juanita Allred of Amarillo, TX. Grandchildren: Deanna Young and husband Tye, Lacy Copeland and husband Casey, April Guillote and husband Stephen, Tyler Avent and wife Stephanie, Kodie James and husband Cody, Tait Avent and Maisen Shae Avent, along with 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
