Coy M. “Stub” Gergen, 84, of Dalhart, Texas, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024. He was born on April 6, 1940, in Lamar, Colorado, to Coy Martin Gergen Sr. and Margaret Ruth Gist. Coy graduated from high school and went on to attend college. On May 14, 1960, he married the love of his life, Rita Heath, in Denver, Colorado. Seven years later, they made the move to Dalhart, where they have shared their life together ever since.
Throughout his life, Coy dedicated himself to his work and community. He worked as a Technician for AT&T for 25 years and served as the Municipal Judge for the City of Dalhart for nearly 30 years. One of the most well-known quotes from the courtroom that resonated with Coy’s life was, “The law is reason, free from passion.” – Aristotle. Coy believed in fairness, integrity, and serving his community with a calm and steady hand, always balancing his duties with compassion. Outside of his professional accomplishments, Coy had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, arrowhead hunting, playing cards, and bowling. One of his most cherished family memories was the hunting trips with his father and sons and the holidays when the whole family would gather together. Family was incredibly important to Coy, and he treasured every moment spent with his loved ones. Coy was also an avid water skier and had a special passion for collecting eagles.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita, of the home; two sons, Dwight and wife Vickie and Grant and wife Jennifer all of Dalhart; one daughter, Danielle “Duke” Hopper of Lubbock; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one son, Blake.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Deacon Lewis Artho officiating. A private burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. Coy’s Home Going celebration is entrusted to Dalhart Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
Coy’s legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to his family and community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Twilight Fund or the Saints Trust.
