Erma Skalsky, aged 102 of Dalhart, peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 o' clock in the morning on Friday, October 18, 2024 at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Father Ted Skalsky as Celebrant and Father Lawrence John assisting. Mrs. Skalsky will lay in state from noon until 5:00pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited at 6 o' clock in the evening on Thursday at the church. Erma's final arrangements are entrusted to Dalhart Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
Erma Maud Phifer Skalsky was born December 3, 1921 to Maud Caroline Hogle Phifer and John Sherman Phifer in Guymon, OK. Ella B. Hogle, her grandmother, delivered her into the world. The family went by horse and wagon to Woodward County, Oklahoma near Quinlan. Ok where they were living at that time. The family moved to Guymon, Ok. In 1928 the family moved to a farm south of Guymon in Texas County, Ok. In 1933 they moved to Stevens County, Kansas. She graduated from Hugoton High School in 1940. In 1943 she moved to Dalhart, Texas to live. She was employed by Film Companies Inc. later she was employed by J. C. Parker for the Mission and LaRita Theatres until May 1951. At that time, she was employed for Citizens State Bank retiring December 1983. She and friends made many vacations tours and included twenty-three days to Europe. They also made several Cruises.
She and Godfrey G. Skalsky were married on Thanksgiving Day November 25, 1965 in St. Anthony Catholic Church in Dalhart, Texas. They made their home in Dalhart. She was one of the original members of the Legion of Mary members starting November 1958 and stayed a member until March of 1997. She served on the finance board of St. Anthony Catholic Church from 1970 until 1997. She was one of the original trustees of the S.A.I.N.T.S. Trust that was formed in March 1986. Until time of her death, she was a Trustee of the Trust.
She is survived by her Stepdaughter Carolyn Wood and husband Michael, a Granddaughter Kimberly Wood and Great Grandson Ian Wood. She is survived by many Nieces and Nephews also Great, Great- Great, Great-Great- Great Nieces & Nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Godfrey G. Skalsky on April 5, 1989. She was preceded in death by her Father John Phifer in March 1929 and her Mother Maud Phifer in November 1987. Also, her brother Glen in November 1953. Her Sisters Ruby Berg October 1991, Helen Berg December 2005, Wanza Bruder March 2012 and Gladys Calhoun March 2019.
In lieu of flowers Erma suggest memorials be made to S.A.I.N.T.S. Trust, 2036 Shawnee Trail, Dalhart, Texas 79022, or your favorite charity.
